The name of Katarzyna Pilic’ series of drawings brings to mind a short story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky from 1876. There, a young woman marries a man who is many years older, who dominates her dreams and personality, ultimately leading her to suicide. The contemporary Gentle Spirit from Pilic’ drawings also suffers: devoid of a voice and causative power, enslaved, locked in a bubble of impossible expectations, divided into pieces under the influence of a male gaze. If she tells about her suffering, no one will hear her anyway. Nobody will believe her anyway. Her experiences do not fit into what can be presented, expressed and understood.
