More than a hundred* years ago, architect Walter Gropius founded a school in the German countryside that revolutionized architecture and design in the world. Outstanding artists of the 20th century worked here – Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger, Wassily Kandinsky, László Moholy-Nagy, Oskar Schlemmer. Although the academy existed for only 14 years, the Bauhaus school still has a great influence on contemporary architecture, design, and teaching methods.

The history of the school is fascinating, but how do you show it to children? Contrary to appearances, the task is not that difficult, because it was a revolutionary and unusual school, it was guided by the principles that appeal to children. Because wouldn’t every child enjoy hearing: No matter what you know, it’s important what talent you have innside! If your talent is not discovered, it is not your fault, it is the teacher’s fault, isn’t it?

At the exhibition, children will learn how to recognize houses designed in accordance with the spirit of the Bauhaus school, but also why the whole school smelled of garlic. What chairs did Marcel Breuer think we should sit on today and how to dance a mathematical dance. How people had fun a hundred years ago. And in the Bauhaus school, people had fun often and willingly, one of the most important motto of the school was the sentence: “We work together, we play together”.

Katarzyna Bogucka’s illustrations are original interpretations of famous photographs documenting school life. The illustrations in the exhibition are accompanied by exhibits designed by professors and students of the Bauhaus, as well as original photographs on postcards and posters.

The exhibition “Bauhaus – the school not only for adults” presented in the Białystok Cultural Center / Ludwik Zamenhof Center is an exhibition for children, but not only.

*102 years to be exact, the school opened on April 1, 1919.
