Multiculturalism is the presence of many different cultures in a society or country. On the one hand, the term is descriptive, it refers to the actual state of affairs in many countries, e.g. in Canada or Switzerland. On the other hand, in a normative sense, multiculturalism refers to the policies pursued by states for the peaceful coexistence of diverse cultures. Zamenhof lived in a multicultural society and was the first in history to describe this phenomenon and to try to give it a normative character of conflict-free coexistence between different cultures, languages and religions. We will analyze this issue, going back, among others, to the history of Poland and the history of Białystok.
